Today I’d like to tell you a short story.
I’d like you to picture a young man who, in a sense, was just beginning his very own life. Sure, he’d had a life before now, but he was only just starting to have his own life. He was attending a college a couple hours away from his hometown and his family. He was doing his own shopping, his own laundry, and he was managing his own schedule. He was independent and excited about life because he was now at the reins.
Up till now, this young man didn’t think too far into the goals he had for his life. When he was in highschool, he simply attended classes, played video games, and goofed around with friends. While there’s nothing wrong with those things, this young man was beginning to move beyond that lifestyle. He was beginning to deeply consider and define his convictions about life and religion. He was beginning to think about what he truly wanted out of life.
Now, what that looked like for this young man, was a family. He wanted a wife who reflected the morals that he was beginning to uphold. He wanted to raise children in union with his beloved wife. He wanted a stable job so that he could provide for his family, and so that his wife could comfortably stay at home so that she may nurture it. He wanted a wife who wanted to stay at and nurture their home. He wanted a wife whose heart and body belonged solely to him, so that she would be his very own little treasure.
But sadly, the young man thought his desires were unattainable. The young man looked around and saw that very little of the world reflected the life that he was desiring. He feared that there were no more women out there that had the qualities he was attracted to. People were loudly preaching that women could do whatever they pleased and that they didn’t need men. People were sleeping around with each other, drinking, swearing, and dressing provocatively. He thought that this image in his mind of a quiet, modest, honorable, feminine young woman who would take care of his home and his children, didn’t exist anymore. He thought that he would have to settle for a woman that didn’t respect him, that didn’t desire to preserve her heart and her body for him, that didn’t share his principles, that didn’t want to take care of her home and her family. He hoped that he could at least find someone who was happy, pretty, and would love him at least a little.
Now I’d like to turn your attention to the young woman in this story. She was coming upon the age where people expected her to start doing something with her life. There were many options that people deemed acceptable for her to do with her life, but there was only one she truly wanted, and she was afraid to say it out loud for fear of judgment. All she really desired in life was to be a wife. She wanted a man that she could give her entire heart and body to without fear. She wanted a man that would lead her and their home with authority and wisdom. She wanted a man that would cherish her. And deep down, what she really wanted but was afraid to say, was a man that desired to keep her home and would have the utmost respect in her for doing so.
She feared that people would look down on her for having these desires, because they would think she was lazy and avoiding the things she didn’t want to do in life. Or they simply wouldn’t consider those desires to be deserving of respect at all. Just being a wife wasn’t enough, they said. She also believed that there were no more men out there that wanted the same things she did. She thought there were no more men out there that wanted a housewife or that would respect her for being one.
She thought that she would have to settle for a man that expected her to put in the same contributions to their marriage that he did. She thought that she’d have to settle for a man that wouldn’t have the authority and grace to lead in the way that she desired. But she hoped that she could at least find someone whom she could love with all her heart and that would love her back.
Thankfully for these two people, God saw them and their desires. He knew them all along and He had a plan for them.
One day the young man and woman’s paths collided and after a little time, they began to notice the qualities that they wanted in each other. The young man couldn’t believe his eyes. Here was a woman who embodied all the things he had been hoping for all along. She was gentle, quiet, modest, and feminine. She shared his beliefs. She wanted to be a wife and to take care of his home. She had preserved her body and heart for the man that she would call her husband. She had been wise with her time and money, and had saved up many resources for her future family and marriage.
She was everything he wanted.
The young woman was equally in awe. This young man was strong, confident, and he wanted to lead and guide his family. He wanted a wife that he could work hard to provide for and keep home. He shared her beliefs and she was confident that she would be proud to stand behind him. And he didn’t look down on her in the slightest for wanting to stay at home, in fact he adored that about her.
It wasn’t too long until the young man and woman became husband and wife. And they lived happily ever after.
That’s such a lovely story, isn’t it? Sadly, it may seem too good to be true. But I’m here to tell you that it’s not, because this story is my own. The young man in this story is my wonderful husband, and I am the young woman who would become his wife.
God did write that perfect story for us, and we absolutely have lived happily ever after.
Now, I don’t tell you my story to gloat. I’m not trying to shame you for the imperfections in your story. I’m simply trying to show you that a story like this is possible. If you’re like me or my husband, you may be thinking that a story like this just isn’t in the cards for you. But it can be. This is absolutely a story that you can hope for, pray for, and make happen, if it’s one that you want.
So don’t give up hope. Don’t settle. Keep hoping, keep waiting, keep praying, and keep saving yourself.
I promise that you will be glad you did.
